Big 12 Mailbag: Big 12 Refs, Mullets and Conference Name Changes?

NCAA Football: Oklahoma State at West Virginia

Welcome to the HCS Big 12 mailbag. This mailbag is for all you football junkies out there who root for a Big 12 school who not only have questions about your team, but other teams in the conference as well. So, join me, grab a cold brew or your favorite drink and relax as I answer all your Big 12 questions in my mailbag. For those interested, I will send out a tweet (@Derekduke25) every Monday at noon until last call (No, not 2 AM) at 8 PM CT for you to send in your questions to be answered every Tuesday right here at Heartland College Sports.

I will pick the best question for each mailbag and label it as my question of the week. The winner gets a free HCS Koozie to keep your beer cold (Unless you like it warm, but that’s just plain wrong). It was busy question day which tells me that this mailbag is working harder than me at my day job. Unlike the “Big 12 blog” over at ESPN (I say that loosely because one story a month is a tragedy), we here at HCS are determined to give you the best Big 12 coverage on the planet. I want to thank each one of you who submitted a question this week and for those reading, I am glad you could join me. I am enjoying a late beer myself to help me work my way through the mailbag.

There are probably some that don’t give a rat’s you know what about how my weekend was. If you do care or even if you don’t, I am going to tell you anyways. Friday, I relaxed and rested up for another great weekend of college football. I left early Saturday morning around 5 AM to get to Lubbock before the 11 AM games kicked off. I watched Big 12 football most of the day in a local coffee shop before heading to the stadium to cover the OU/Tech game. I was busy handling recaps for most of the day and I finally was able to head to my car close to midnight and eventually made it back to my hotel around 1:30 AM. Sunday, I finished my articles up and most importantly, GOT SOME SLEEP before heading back home.

@Rock101Pregame asks: Who has the better mullet Holgorsen or Gundy?

Duke: First off, I want to say if you are a Texas Tech fan, you should tune in to Rock 101.1 in Lubbock for one of the best post-game shows in the biz. Anytime I travel to Lubbock, I always tune in on my way back to my hotel and you should to. Now, my answer to the question is Mike Gundy and it’s not even close. I still am not sure what exactly Dana is doing with that messy hair and what he is going for there. Hell, I am not even sure he combs his messy hair at all. Gundy on the other hand, keeps it much cleaner and it just looks better. He’s all business in the front and party in the back.

@PetittFarms asks: Have you ever seen a team receive unsportsmanlike conduct penalties for flashing the Horns down? If not, what is your opinion of why that happened to WVU on Saturday in Austin? Can Texas be considered WVU’s rival?

Duke: I know that it has been called before but from my memory, the penalty is entirely up to the officials because nothing in the rule book says that it’s not allowed. Here’s my take on that situation, if horns up is not a penalty than neither should horns down. I have no answer to why it was flagged and apparently Dana Holgorsen didn’t either. The bottom line is that it shouldn’t be a flag. As far as Texas being West Virginia’s rival is bland to me because it seems like every team in the Big 12 looks as Texas as their rival. I still think that Oklahoma is West Virginia’s biggest rival and over the last few years, that game has been chippy to say the least.

@MissionCFB asks: Which Big 12 win was more impressive this season? WVU over Texas? Texas over Oklahoma? Or Iowa State over WVU? Or Something else? Also, which remaining game has the most on the line outside of WVU & OU?

Duke: Great question here that should make some gears start turning in this empty head of mine. These were all impressive games but one of those games stuck out to me more than any other game on the list or throughout the season. I’ll go with Iowa State’s win over West Virginia. The way they dominated West Virginia and kept that offense to just 152 total yards is still mind boggling to me. As for the most intriguing game left besides the OU/WVU game, it must be when Iowa State travels to Austin on November 17th. If Iowa State wins out, I really like their chances of reaching a Big 12 title game and that will by far be their toughest game remaining. The same goes for Texas although I don’t like their chances of reaching a Big 12 title game. Essentially, the loser is eliminated from any hope of reaching the conference title game.

@hebertogonzalez asks: What was the worst incorrect penalty in the WVU/Texas game?

Duke: There were more than enough crappy calls in this game on both sides. If I had a dollar for every bad call by the refs in this game, I would have enough money to make Floyd Mayweather Jr. poor. The most disappointing call to me was the whole horns down thing. Again, if horns up is not a flag, then why should horns down be a flag?

@KyleGAdema asks: Hypothetical…Iowa State wins out and Brock Purdy continues to throw 3 TDs a game. Conference play of the year?

Duke: That’s a very possible scenario however, even if he did that, Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray still may average 4 touchdowns a game for the rest of the season. Murray is averaging 362 yards of offense per game right now which leads the Big 12. Again, even if Purdy was able to do that, I have a hard time not seeing Kyler Murray outperform him. Kyler is on another level right now and that’s why he is a Heisman contender.

@RPTexan asks: When will Bowlsby or someone, step in and get the officials to at least stop making huge mistakes?

Duke: I am not one to blame everything on the officials but what I saw this past weekend in nearly every Big 12 games was not very good. From inconsistencies, to hour long replays for nothing, I just about was fed up last weekend. Nothing will be done immediately but after the season something must change. Will it happen though? I wouldn’t hold my breath on it.

@TrisyMC asks: When are y’all going to start a petition to change the name of the Big 12 to the Heartland Conference?

Duke: I’d have to win the lottery a few times for that to happen, so I can buy out the name of the Big 12 and change it. It would be a fun conference though if we ran it. First thing I would do is force schools to sell beer at all games. We would have an annual toilet bowl for the two worst teams in the conference and I would let football players tackle any idiot who runs on the field during a game. I would also travel everywhere with a big fur coat and a cigar in my mouth taking a limo around anywhere I go. Maybe at the end of the season we could do a coach’s royal rumble and sell some tickets?
